Military escorts for the protection of travellers on the trail were common. The trail was established in 1821 and the first recorded escort was in 1829. The route crossed through the territories of several different tribes, and they did not always welcome the presence of outsiders. As can be seen from Frank's diary there were still dangers in 1865. As pressure from outside settlers and travellers grew, the land (and the lifeways) of the Indians became threatened and conflicts were common, persisting until the 1880s in some cases.
